Hypothesis (Significance) Tests About a Proportion

چکیده

Example 1 The standard treatment for a disease works in 0.675 of all patients. A new treatment is proposed. Is it better? (The scientists who created it claim it is. You – as an advocate for a patient or sales personnel for the company that eventually would market it – must be more skeptical. Where’s the data?) An initial clinical trial of n = 100 patients (of similar general health) is conducted: 77 people are cured. Assume the selection of patients is random. Test appropriate hypotheses at the 1% significance level.

False Discovery Rates

In hypothesis testing, statistical significance is typically based on calculations involving p-values and Type I error rates. A p-value calculated from a single statistical hypothesis test can be used to determine whether there is statistically significant evidence against the null hypothesis. The upper threshold applied to the p-value in making this determination (often 5% in the scientific li...

HYPOTHESIS TESTING FOR AN EXCHANGEABLE NORMAL DISTRIBUTION

Consider an exchangeable normal vector with parameters ????2, and ?. On the basis of a vector observation some tests about these parameters are found and their properties are discussed. A simulation study for these tests and a few nonparametric tests are presented. Some advantages and disadvantages of these tests are discussed and a few applications are given.

The Effect Size: Beyond Statistical Significance

The branch of statistics known as inferential statistics tries to find out information about a population by studying a representative sample of that population. The main tools of inferential statistics are the statistical significance tests. Every statistical significance test includes two hypotheses; the null hypothesis (H0) and the alternative hypothesis (H1). The null hypothesis assumes tha...

Null Hypothesis Significance Testing II Class 18 , 18 . 05 Jeremy Orloff and Jonathan Bloom

We continue our study of significance tests. In these notes we will introduce two new tests: one-sample t-tests and two-sample t-tests. You should pay careful attention to the fact that every test makes some assumptions about the data – often that is drawn from a normal distribution. You should also notice that all the tests follow the same pattern. It is just the computation of the test statis...
